This is the photograph that appeared in the Tenby Observer just a couple of days ago under the headline 'Who cares for the carers?'. It's part of a campaign to get fairer treatment for the carers that come in to look after my father-in-law three times a day. That's me and him, and you can read the Observer's excellent article here.
Recently, Pembrokeshire County Council has been fierce in its crackdown on illegal parking in the town, and this is having a severe impact on the way the carers do their job. Doctors, nurses, and even, would you believe, vets are all allowed to park on yellow lines in the course of their work. But carers are not, and it is making their lives, and those of the people they care for, hell.
These girls are paid very little, and they do a vast amount of good. They cover a wide area around Tenby, and often, on leaving my father-in-law, they are late arriving at their next port of call, just as they are often late arriving at our house, due to the fact that they have had to hunt for a legal parking space, and only been able to find one some distance away. To make matters worse, until recently, they had to pay for their own parking tickets. One girl recently got four tickets in one day. Do you know what that represents? Her week's wages. They do all the jobs that we don't want to do, and they deserve better treatment. They are unfailingly cheerful—I've actually heard them singing as they attend to my father-in-law at seven-thirty in the morning.
Our aim is to get Pembrokeshire County Council to amend the rules, pure and simple, so that the carers can do the job that so many people in Tenby depend on, without having to worry overmuch about where they park while they do it, and certainly without being penalised.
The campaign is off to a great start, with posters and petition forms in many shops around Tenby, and hundreds of signatures gathered altready. I've been on Radio Pembrokeshire too, and the campaign gathers force! If you can help in any way at all, I'd be delighted to hear from you, either by email or by clicking the Twitter button below.
